Palm Coast woman celebrates 65th birthday at AdventHealth after surviving two cardiac arrests

Lisa Rose of Palm Coast had more than one reason to smile as she marked her 65th birthday in the intensive care unit (ICU), surrounded by balloons, cheesecake and the care team that helped her reach that moment.

Rose was admitted to AdventHealth Palm Coast for a procedure with a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. Rose was expected to return home the next day, but while in the ICU post operatively, she suffered cardiac arrest. After a few days of progress, she suffered a second cardiac arrest.

Despite the setbacks, Rose’s spirit remained strong, and her care team was determined to bring light into her recovery.

“She’s been through so much, but she is a fighter,” said ICU nurse Melanie Makahiya. “We all wanted her to feel special on her birthday - to be something more than just another day in the hospital.”

On May 31, nurses, therapists, and other team members worked together to help Rose go outside for the first time in more than two weeks. Even rain didn’t stop the team or dampen the moment.

The next day, Makahiya decorated her room with a birthday banner and worked with a group of colleagues to make the day special.

“Night shift started Lisa’s birthday off with a blown-up glove decorated like a birthday cake by ICU RN, Desiree Silva,” said Makahiya. “The kitchen brought her a happy birthday card with everyone’s signature. The ICU team and respiratory team gave her a card as well and even Dr. Khan signed. The entire respiratory team came to personally greet her happy birthday.”

Speech therapist Cheryl Diorio – who came in on her day off – made sure Rose could safely enjoy a slice of her favorite dessert: a slice of cheesecake her daughter brought in to celebrate.

“I am just thankful to be here,” said Rose. “It felt wonderful to be outside. The cheesecake was so good.”

Now, Rose is walking in the hospital courtyard, a small but meaningful step in her recovery. She still has work ahead, but her birthday celebration stands as a reminder of how far she’s come and how much she’s overcome.

“Lisa reminds us why we do this,” said Makahiya. “She’s living proof that a little joy, a little movement, and a whole lot of teamwork can go a long way. Her wide-eyed expression of excitement as she took a bite of the cheesecake was pure joy and satisfaction, which reminds us of the what we do and why we do this is rewarding.”
