Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) has earned recognition for its Orthopedic and Spine Center by three national organizations, demonstrating its commitment to providing quality patient care and advancements in orthopedics. SMH received the 2017 Star Performer recognition from The American Orthopaedic Associations (AOA) Own the Bone program, the Aetna Institute of Quality Orthopedic Care Facility for spine surgery, and The Joint Commissions Gold Seal of Approval for Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.
The three recognitions all support efforts by winning hospitals and health systems who are taking measures toward quality care, consistent service and patient safety in orthopedics. SMH is one of over 200 health care institutions nationwide, and the only hospital in Johnson County, that has taken initiatives to ensure its osteoporotic fracture patients receive the treatment and care they deserve by implementing the AOA's Own the Bone program. As an Aetna Institute of Quality Orthopedic Care Facility, SMH is recognized for its unique expertise in consistently delivering evidence-based, safe care in spine surgery. The Joint Commissions Gold Seal of Approval for Certification recognizes Shawnee Mission Medical Center for elevating the quality, consistency, and safety of its services in patient care.
"Achieving Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement recognizes Shawnee Mission Health's commitment to provide care in a safe and efficient manner for patients," said Patrick Phelan, executive director, Hospital Business Development, The Joint Commission. "The certification will help Shawnee Mission Health better provide coordinated and comprehensive care to patients undergoing a total hip or total knee replacement."
The Shawnee Mission Orthopedic and Spine Center performs full joint replacements, spine and fracture care, rehabilitation therapy specialties, and sports care, paint management and occupational medicine to prevent and treat existing injuries.
"We are proud to receive national recognition of our unwavering commitment to patient care in our community," said Shawnee Mission Orthopedic and Spine Center Director Beth Armstrong. "Patient safety is at the forefront of our mission, and with the collaboration of our physicians and clinical staff, we are able to deliver the most attentive, high-quality and personalized care tailored to each patient."
Surgeons at SMH perform over 750 joint replacements each year. The Shawnee Mission Orthopedic and Spine Center is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team, including orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and case managers. Patients and their loved ones can also receive support from social services, utilization management associates and chaplains.
