Brimley, guided by handler Janet Beasley, came to brighten up Lake County resident Eleanor Perry’s day with some pet therapy.
In the halls of AdventHealth Waterman, a unique kind of healer roams—one with a wagging tail and a wet nose.
Meet Brimley, one of the 17 pet therapy dogs bringing joy and comfort to patients like Eleanor Perry, who found solace in Brimley's presence while recovering from joint replacement surgery.
“Our pets are our best friends and love us unconditionally,” Perry shared, her eyes lighting up as Brimley entered the room. “I miss my dog, and this helps fill the void.”
Brimley's owner, Janet Beasley, is one of the 19 dedicated volunteer handlers at AdventHealth Waterman. After witnessing the positive impact of pet therapy on her ailing father, Beasley was inspired to bring this joy to others.
“There is something miraculous in knowing we are making people feel better,” added Beasley.
According to the National Center for Health Research, pet therapy can improve heart health, reduce stress and enhance mental well-being.
“Pet therapy has been a game-changer for our patients,” said Diana Robertson, nurse manager of the orthopedics medical surgical unit. “We've seen remarkable improvements in stress reduction, depression and overall mental health. The patients’ faces light up when we tell them the pets are coming.”
AdventHealth Waterman champions the healing power of pet therapy, with these furry heroes visiting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The therapy dogs visit patient units, the emergency department lobby and the main lobby area, even making special visits to team members. Staff eagerly await these visits, finding a sense of calm and comfort during their busy days.
As National Animal Therapy Day approaches on April 30, AdventHealth Waterman honors these incredible animals and their handlers who volunteer their time to bring smiles and comfort to those in need.
“This program embodies the healing the ministry of Christ and provides whole person care, and our patients truly benefit from this,” said Robertson.
At AdventHealth Waterman, the pet therapy program is more than just a visit from a dog—it's a lifeline of love and healing.
