Nurses Receive the DAISY Award

ORANGE CITY, Fla., August 16, 2018 AdventHealth Fish Memorial recognized registered nurses Sara Cianciarulo and Sarah Garguilo with the DAISY award.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses.

Cianciarulo works on the medical-surgical unit and was recently promoted to assistant nurse manager. She was nominated for this recognition by a patient at AdventHealth Fish Memorial who had a mass on his bladder and kidney.

Sara was trying to keep us in good spirits and had learned we had Golden Retrievers (our fur babies), so every day, she would share pictures with me of hers and I would share mine with her, the patient wrote.

One day, Cianciarulo arranged for a special visitor for her patient.

Unbeknown to me, she had called my house and arranged for my dearest dog to come visit me and got a mean old man to cry with joy that someone would do that for me!! This is truly connecting with a patient and seeing what you can do to pick up their spirit, the patient added. I will forever remember that day and what Miss Sara did to help me smile and get through all of this.

Garguilo is an assistant nurse manager in AdventHealth Fish Memorials progressive care unit and was nominated by a fellow nurse.

We once had a homeless patient on our floor. She had been recently evicted from her home. The patient was very stressed about this along with everything else that was going on with her health. The next day, when I came into care for her, she had new belongings in her room: warm blankets, slipper, pillows. She was so elated to have a few items of her own to comfort her. I don’t think Sarah ever told anyone, but I knew she bought those items for the patient, the colleague wrote. She inspired me to be a more giving nurse.

Created in 1999, more than 2,500 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 15 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.

In recognition of this honor, Cianciarulo and Garguilo each received a bouquet of daisies, a certificate, a tote bag, and a hand-carved stone sculpture of the Healers Touch by an artist of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

Their units, AdventHealth Fish Memorials progressive care unit and the medical-surgical unit, also received cinnamon rolls and a DAISY banner to display.
