Charlie Lumpkin was awarded Gordon Hospitals prestigious Extra Mile Award. Lumpkin is a security officer at Gordon Hospital.
This special award was created by members of the hospitals Employee Engagement Committee to recognize employees who go above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis. It is awarded monthly to deserving employees selected by the hospitals directors.
Marc Couey, security officer supervisor at Gordon Hospital, nominated Lumpkin with the following words: Charlie was contacted by the switchboard one afternoon about an elderly couple from Cumming, Georgia, that were lost and had no idea how to get home. Charlie responded and spoke to the couple, soon realizing that they both might have Alzheimers. Charlie sat and spoke with the couple and helped the wife locate her daughters phone number. The daughter agreed to come pick her parents up. While they waited, Charlie made sure they were taken care of by going to the cafeteria to purchase food and coffee for them. He also sat and talked with them until the daughter arrived, keeping their focus on the conversation and not allowing them to worry about driving home or being lost. He went above and beyond his duty to ensure that this couple was okay and that they made it back safely to their family. Charlie handled the situation perfectly with compassion and understanding. He is a great asset to security and to Gordon Hospital.
It is an honor to receive this award, said Lumpkin. I just try to treat people the way I would want someone to treat my family if they were in the same circumstances.
Outside of his profession, Lumpkin enjoys kayaking, camping, backpacking, climbing, and spending time with his fiance and two sons.
