ORANGE CITY, Fla., January 23, 2018 On Jan. 18, the community joined Florida Hospital Fish Memorial for a free information session about the hip joint and addressed ways to prevent injuries, including important stretches before and after exercise.
The hip joint is one of the most important joints in the human body, allowing us to walk, run and jump. A good understanding of its role in mobility and stability is key, Erin Leegan, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial physical therapist, said during the event.
The most common type of hip pain is caused by osteoarthritis, impacting up to a quarter of all American adults, Leegan said.
Osteoarthritis of the hip is primarily caused by age, developmental disorders, and previous hip injury, and secondarily by genetics, occupation and body mass index (BMI).
To prevent further wear and tear or arthritis, almost everyone over the age of 18 should be stretching regularly, in addition to performing resistance exercises and controlled weight loading exercises to strengthen the body, Leegan said.
