VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES, Fla., October 7, 2016, at 12:30PM Impact winds from Hurricane Matthew have arrived to Volusia and Flagler counties and extreme winds and wind gusts are forecasted to extend through Saturday morning.
The Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties, which composes the Florida Hospital East Florida Region, have additional protective actions taken to report:
- Florida Hospital DeLand in DeLand has not been evacuated and the emergency department is open for patients with medical emergencies. For the safety of our patients and staff, all hospital entrances for visitors were locked on Oct. 6 at 7 pm, except for the emergency department and ambulance entrances.
- Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City has not been evacuated and the emergency department is open for patients with medical emergencies. For the safety of our patients and staff, all hospital entrances for visitors were locked on Oct. 6 at 5 pm, except for the emergency department and ambulance entrances.
- All patients at Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast were evacuated. However, the emergency department remains open for patients with medical emergencies. For the safety of our patients and staff, all hospital entrances for visitors were locked on Oct. 6 at 2 pm, except for the emergency department and ambulance entrances.
- Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach has not been evacuated and the emergency department is open for patients with medical emergencies. For the safety of our patients and staff, all hospital entrances for visitors were locked on Oct. 6 at 2 pm, except for the emergency department and ambulance entrances.
- All patients at Florida Hospital Oceanside in Ormond Beach were evacuated and the emergency department is closed. The facility will not be evaluated until after the storm has passed.
- All patients at Florida Hospital New Smyrna in New Smyrna Beach were evacuated and the emergency department is closed. The facility has experienced some roof breaches and has lost three of four canopies. The hospital has lost utility power, and although the facility does have back-up generators, city power will be required to begin recovery, and thus reopening the hospital on Sunday is doubtful with current and developing weather conditions.
The decision to evacuate was not an easy one. As the storm developed and approached the area, Florida Hospital leadership worked with local Emergency Operations Centers to make a decision to ensure the safety of patients and employees.
It is important to note that the hospitals do not serve as community hurricane shelters and community members are encouraged to either stay at a designated hurricane shelter or evacuate from the storms impact zone.
All shelters in east Volusia are full. Nine shelters still have capacity in West Volusia. More information can be found on the emergency management page on www.Volusia.org.
Flagler County has activated three shelter sites, located at Buddy Taylor Middle School, Bunnell Elementary School, and Rymfire Elementary School (this is the only special needs location). More information can be found at www.flagleremergency.com.

- Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast began evacuations today (Oct. 5) and will continue with evacuations tomorrow (Oct. 6).
- Patients will be transferred to other Florida Hospital facilities.
- At this time, the Florida Hospital Flagler emergency department is currently open for medical emergencies.
- The emergency department at Florida Hospital New Smyrna in New Smyrna Beach will close at 2 pm tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 6).
VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES, Fla., October 5, 2016, at 3:15 PM Volusia and Flagler counties are now anticipating a catastrophic impact resulting from severe winds and rain from Hurricane Matthew.
The Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties, which composes the Florida Hospital East Florida Region, have individual hurricane plans to help staff prepare, respond and recover from a potential storm.
There are several considerations such as wind speeds and storm surge that factor into the decision of whether or not to evacuate a hospital facility. In an abundance of caution, protective actions taken at the Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties include:
- Florida Hospital Oceanside in Ormond Beach was evacuated today (Wednesday, Oct. 5).
- Approximately 50 patients from Florida Hospital Oceanside's inpatient rehabilitation facility (Florida Hospital Peninsula Rehabilitation) and Transitional Care Unit were transported to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
- Florida Hospital Oceanside's emergency department is also closed, as the hospital has been completely evacuated.
- Florida Hospital New Smyrna in New Smyrna Beach has been evacuated.
- Approximately 30 medical/surgical patients and progressive care unit patients were transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.
- Approximately 5 intensive care unit patients were transported to Florida Hospital DeLand in DeLand.
- The ERs will be open and available for patients in emergency medical situations at:
- Florida Hospital DeLand in DeLand
- Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City
- Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach
- As of Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 am through the storms duration, all Florida Hospital outpatient facilities within the East Florida Region will be closed. Additionally, all procedures, diagnostic testing and outpatient appointments are cancelled and will need to be rescheduled for future dates.
