Care Management Assistant Meghan Bussard, LBSW, chose to work at AdventHealth because she loves working in healthcare; working closely with patients to better understand their needs and to be a listening ear for patients when they need it the most.
“Often patients are discharged without proper medical equipment or lack of everyday resources to help themselves improve their lives physically, mentally, and emotionally,” said Bussard. “Ensuring patients have all the necessary medical equipment, appointments, resources, etc., to live a healthy life and feel whole.”
Bussard was the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Team Member Award for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. Bussard is known across AdventHealth Shawnee Mission as a problem solver, always thinking ahead and taking proactive steps to ensure that needs are met before they are even asked.
Whether it’s assisting patients in finding affordable healthcare resources, helping families navigate complex information, or stepping in to support their colleagues on even the busiest days, this individual does it all with positivity, efficiency, and a servant’s heart.
“The best day at work for me was providing multiple community resources to a patient who was struggling to afford medications, rent, etc., due to them being uninsured and unemployed. I was able to provide prescription resources, local agencies that assist with rent or utility payments, food pantries, clothing closets and more,” said Bussard. “The patient was tearful and was beyond thankful to receive these resources. A couple of days later, this patient was being discharged and verbalized their gratitude when passing in the hallway.”
Beyond her responsibilities, Bussard is a mentor and a leader, developing training modules and guiding new team members with patience and expertise. She thrives under pressure, handling challenging situations with empathy and collaboration, ensuring that patients and families feel heard and supported. Her ability to bring calm to difficult moments is truly remarkable, and her impact is felt by everyone who has the pleasure of working alongside her.
“I was taken by surprise when my name was announced when I received the Outstanding Team Member Award,” Bussard said. “I am beyond thankful to be recognized for making it easy, not just for the patients, but my coworkers as well.”
Bussard appreciates turning to her team for questions and guidance in her everyday work.
“My team supports me mentally, emotionally, and physically. My team is amazing at helping tackle the needs of patients in the hospital and being a listening ear for the days are not so great. My team is full of knowledge and resources.”
Bussard says she wouldn’t be where she is today without the inspiration she received early in life.
“My grandparents inspired me to work in health care. My grandmother always struggled with diabetes, as well as other medical complications,” said Bussard.
She would assist with taking her grandmother to appointments or stay overnight with her at home or when she would be admitted to the hospital; ensuring she had all the necessary outpatient or in-home services arranged.
