ABC Action News | Dr. Doug Ross shares signs, symptoms of Legionnaires' disease following death of Pinellas County teacher
Dr. Ross explained that the disease often starts with symptoms resembling a bad cold, including headaches and high fevers. As it progresses, patients can experience a persistent cough and, in severe cases, confusion. Those most at risk include individuals over 50, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm, stagnant water often found in large commercial air-conditioning systems or cooling towers. Dr. Ross spoke about the importance of maintaining these systems to prevent the spread of the bacteria.
Health officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Pennington’s death, which has raised concerns among parents and staff. Read more about her story and the ongoing investigation here.
