Andrew Helms, MD, FACS, FCCP

Andrew Helms, MD, FACS, FCCP, is a board-certified thoracic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of complex chest conditions, including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic tumors, pleural and pericardial effusions, pneumothorax, chest wall abnormalities, and mediastinal masses. He offers advanced surgical procedures such as robotic-assisted chest surgery, VATS, thoracotomy, mediastinoscopy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, thymectomy, rib fixation, and esophageal interventions including myotomy and stenting. Dr. Helms earned his Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master’s in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University before pursuing his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his general surgery internship at the University of Southern California and residency at the University of New Mexico, followed by fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery and thoracic surgical oncology at the University of New Mexico and University California San Francisco, respectively. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

Outside of medicine, Dr. Helms enjoys surfing, flying gliders, mountain biking, cycling, and woodworking.
